Winnipeg Indie Film has Waits Connection

A small budget independent film called Seven Times Lucky apparently features several Tom Waits songs plus a fun little twist:

Music was an inspiration, too. Yates says the movie is infused with a mood created by Ray Charles and Tom Waits music, and every character in the film is named for a character from a Waits song.

Tom Waits Cover Show

I almost missed this one. giacommin posted a couple of comments about a cover show tomorrow night at the Visulite Theatre in Charlotte, NC. The show is entitled 2nd Annual April Fools Brigade Benefit: “Invitation To The Blues… an Evening of Tom Waits”. The doors open at 9:00 PM and tickets are ten dollars. A full listing of the performers and theatre information can be found at the Visulite Theatre site.

“Underground” in Robots

The song “Underground” is being featured in the movie Robots. This movie is directed by Chris Wedge who with Blue Sky Studios made the Academy Award winning short Bunny in which Tom Waits and Kathleen Brenann wrong the sound track and features the rare lullaby “Bend Down the Branches”.

Glad to see that Tom Waits is still a favorite son of Hollywood.

Cirque de Soleil Splinter Group to Use Tom Waits

Some former members of Cirque de Soleil have formed their own circus group called Les 7 Doigts de la Main which features some Tom Waits tunes in their performance:

Cirque’s new-age soundtrack is replaced by a combination of styles, including some great Tom Waits, rap and beat-box action, didgeridoo and tango all mixed live on stage by Les 7 Doigt’s DJ Pocket.

Tom Waits featured in South Orange Cabaret Show

The Cabaret show “Old Friends: Melodies and Memories” at the Dreamcatcher Repertory Theatre in South Orange, New Jersey features a Tom Waits cover:

Christian, clad in black and blue, under a casually unruly mop of black hair, provides the comic persona, often contorting his face to the degree that he often resembles Rue McClanahan. Yet when he takes on a tender song, such as Tom Waits’ “Shiver Me Timbers,” he easily makes the adjustment to a serious mode.

Tom Waits Interview Collection

A collection of Tom Waits interviews entitled Innocent When You Dream will be published in June:

Innocent When You Dream: The Tom Waits Reader will hit bookshelves on June 15, 2005. The book collects Waits interviews from Interview, Playboy and other sources, and includes snippets from his adventures in Fishing With John (where he put a damn fish down his pants), as well as TV appearances with David Letterman. The collection features a foreward by Frank Black.

A Stage production of Night on Earth

My favorite Jim Jarmusch film, Night on Earth (which features an all Tom Waits soundtrack) is being turned into a stage show:

Dutch theatre company De Fusie stages Nachtrit, a production based on Night on Earth. This piece, with four actors making their directing debut, is said to use a lot of Tom Waits music to create an exciting performance.

East of Sunset Premere

The independent movie East of Sunset that was finished up last year will premiere at The Method Fest Breakout Independent Film Festival on April 5 and 7th at The Edwards Cinema’s in Calabasas, CA.

This film’s soundtrack consists of covers of Tom Waits’ songs written between 1973 and 1983. Several of the covers appear to come from the “Step Right Up” tribute album that came out in 1995. It also includes covers by Alex Chilton, Lydia Lunch, Sally Norvall and Drugstore. It also features new covers and in film performances by San Francisco’s [The] Caseworker. You can see a move clip of [The] Caseworker performing “Old Shoes” here.

Also, according to The Eyeball Kid, there will be a DVD release soon for those, who like me, can’t make the screening.

Life Update

Sorry for the lack of posting lately. Just as I revived this site, my job comes crashing in. However, I’m finally coming back up for air. I haven’t missed too much news, but here comes a blast post of news that I missed posting . . .

John Hammond’s Creative Spark

Blues singer and slide guitar extraordinaire John Hammond suggested that working with Mr. Waits had something to do with his recent desire to start writing his own songs for the first time in his long career:

“What an extraordinary experience! Tom Waits is such a tremendous songwriter, and someone I’d always admired, and all of a sudden he calls and wants to work together on an album of his songs,” Hammond says. “It was such a great experience working with him, and he ended up playing rhythm guitar in the band.
“It was real progression from there,” he says. “It just opened me up a lot and probably had something to do with my getting around to writing.”

Real Gone Reviews Still Coming In

Surprisingly, there are still new reviews of Real Gone:

Say what you will about Tom Waits; he’s been slugging it out for decades. Love him or hate him, he has one thing that most music lacks today: soul. His album “Real Gone” is no exception to this rule.
