Recycled Music

This is an obscure little piece about some of the more creative instrument makers including a brief talk with a man who has created instruments for Mr. Waits himself:

Coffee and Cigarettes Review

Marc Caro of the Chicago Tribune (one on my favorite film critics) has posted his review of Coffee and Cigarettes. While he doesn’t think much of the film, there is high praise for the Iggy Pop/Tom Waits short.

TOM WAITS ON TOUR

The Eyeball Kid has posted some really great news. A small news paragraph on Rain Dogs guitar player Mark Ribot’s website makes some insinuations that Tom Waits will go on tour in support of his upcoming album. Being that the man tours so infrequently, this would be great news. The paragraph that has us all excited is:

New Tom Waits Album In The Works
Marc Ribot recently completed recording sessions in San Francisco for Tom Waits’s new album on Epitaph Records. Check back for updates on the album’s progress and tour dates.

Thanks again to the Eyeball Kid for sending me this update.

Tom Waits on a Tin Flute

I found this weird reference on the Bangor Daily News site. Apparently, there is an Traditional Celtic group whose repertoire includes Waits and Dylan songs:

Led by Seamus Egan, Solas is a five-member Irish-American band “that applies Celtic-style virtuosity to material well outside typical jigs and reels,” according to The New York Times. A case in point is the group’s latest album, “The Edge of Silence,” which explores the Celtic roots of American music by reworking the music of such contemporary artists as Tom Waits and Bob Dylan.

Festival names more artists

The album came out in 2002 with a cover of Georgial Lee but this is the first I’ve heard of it. Is it any good?

Martin Hederos and Mattias Hellberg

According to Amazon and Mitch Kirsner of the Raindogs Mailing List, the duo Martin Hederos and Mattias Hellberg are covering Soldier’s Things on their latest album entitled Hederos and Hellberg. Has anyone out there heard it yet?

Rain Dogs Cover Night

A Peterborough (Canada) band, The Sliver Hearts, will be covering the complete Rain Dogs album for two performances on June 12th. Apparently the first performance in May caused caused quite a positive uproar among the Tom Waits community and they have given in for some more shows. But the uproar seems well deserved. They apparently are going all out to make this a true Tom Waits experience:

The Silver Hearts are pulling out the stops to make it worth your dough. They’re setting up a vaudeville-style cornucopia of performers culled from Peterborough’s art community. Dancers, clowns and other fringey types will put on a show that the Hearts have described as “a cross between a traditional medicine show, a rock concert, a cabaret and Tony & Tina’s wedding.” Since the actual Tom Waits only tours once every seven years or so, this is the closest you’re going to get to the actual thing.

Thanks to Jarlath Golding of the Raindogs Mailing List for bring this to my attention.
